Everyone has their favorite distribution. You appear to be saying you are going
to use it when everyone else is using windows. That is not generally a good idea
if computers are an essential function of the organization such that they have
to talk to each other seamlessly. Guarantee you they will not do it seamlessly
and your in-house folks are not likely able to help you or care to help you.
Even if you do not notice gross problems there are guaranteed to be minor
compatibility problems which can be crucial as Microsoft is often deliberately
obnoxious.
Open Office is more than good enough to be used instead of MS Office. But if MS
does what it has been doing for years it will introduce critical
incompatibilities or even simply search for indications of a thing having been
created by OO and refuse to load it. They deliberately screwed HTML and almost
got away with doing the same to Java. They will be doing it to keep OO out of
the competition.
In other words, don't do it.

Do you mean RHEL 3.0? Support for it costs money. I don't know how much but it
is your personal budget. Look into it first. If you go with RH then FC4 is the
only thing to use at this time AND do yum -yt upgrade as soon as you know it has
installed. This assumes at least a DSL connection. If all you have is a modem
the first upgrade will take a day or so.

They are all available for free downloads online. If I remember correctly some
of them like Suse charge for upgrades to what is on a distribution disc. It
should all be spelled out on their home pages.
Back when I decided to switch to linux full time I choose Redhat solely because
at the time it was the most common. I could not find any other good reason to
choose among the distros. i reasoned that being the most common there would be
the most people to help.
I have participated in this newsgroup when I switch to linux full time about 7
years ago and almost all the questions have been distribution independent so
maybe my choice was not for the best reason. However so many years later I do
not know of any reason to choose one distribution over another if you want a
fully functional linux distribution. There are some special purpose
distributions such as for A/V or just to be "damn small" linux or that will run
from a CD or some other special purpose. I am certain there are reasons for the
different distributions but I have yet to come across one that makes a
difference to me.
