It's not only long-time Linux true believers who say that Linux will
eventually wipe out Windows. An former Microsoft employee of 11 years
says that "proprietary software is eventually going to be doomed," and
believes that Microsoft's future lies in releasing its own version of
Linux.

Keith Curtis, former Microsoft Research employee and author of After
the Software Wars, told an interviewer for Network World in a podcast
that "I do believe that proprietary software is eventually going to be
doomed."...

As for how Microsoft can survive if free software dominates, he
believes the company should release its own version of Linux, saying:

"I think we could all be running Microsoft Linux...I sent an e-
mail to Steve Ballmer about this and he said he wasn't
interested...Microsoft could very easily dominate the Linux market if
they wanted to."

He also claims that technology will progress more quickly using free
software than proprietary software. He writes in his book:

"The key to faster technological progress is making software free.
The difference between free, and non-free or proprietary software, is
similar to the divide between science and alchemy. Before science,
there was alchemy, where people guarded their ideas because they
wanted to corner the market on the mechanisms used to convert lead
into gold."

Gralla doesn't agree, but recommends the podcast as interesting.

Eventually yes. I mean "Free" things can only get better - look at
Firefox for a great example. But the world will eventually get hit by a
giant asteroid too. The question is : which will happen first?

Huh? Free SW is one thing. A free OS is another. While all the best Free
SW runs on MS then they will do fine. As its market share and the
unprecedented demand for Windows 7 has demonstrated at the same time
that Ubuntu has just driven a nail into its own coffin with another
sloppy release - once the poster boy of Linux distros it's now doomed
Linux to more years of less than 1% market share/install base/ whatever
you want to call it.

There's a surprise.

Well - if one disgruntled former employee predicts this then it must be
true.

Especially one who is writing a book !
Gee you think this is connected somehow?
Nahhh!
Can't be.

He's making a huge mistake though if he thinks he can sell his book to the
Open Source freetards.
They don't like paying for stuff.

See Loki for details.

I thought that maybe he was trying to get his own reality show.

Well, it's good to hear that there isn't any self-interest in him making
these crazy statements. (sarcasm)

Read the book trolls it is available free in PDF format and has been out
for months. The author is not a disgruntled ex-employee and not anti-MS
but rather pro-Open Source.

What is it a MS payday or something? Trolling seems to hit a new high.
Aren't you the same ones that whine every time an advocate complains
that a study was paid for by MS yet here you are discrediting someone
you know nothing about and haven't even read his book.

Especially a hypocritical one that made a lot of MS money and now fancies
himself a freedom fighter, like Homer.

Whatever their motivation, they're wrong. Very much wrong.

It's common sense: too many people and corporations have too much time and
money invested to switch, and it's not that important to them anyway. And
it doesn't cost much to upgrade Windows/Office every 3-5 years.
