Hello group. It's been many years since I was a RedHat user (6.0) and so
I've forgotten how to do a few things. As I am trying to install a certain
application (Compiere ERP/CRM) and the tutorial I'm trying to follow is
written for Fedora 10 I thought I'd install this (Fedora10). I got a used
box from a friend recently and installed openSUSE-11.1. As the computer is
an old DEll® it needed me to run sax2 in runlevel 3 to get the graphics
right and do the gui install. In 11.1 I just hit 'crtl+alt+F3' to get to a
text prompt (virtual terminal)and change runlevel and run sax2. But in
Fedora 10 I'm not sure how to do this ?? If I just try to do the install
it gets to the first couple of screens where I input the hostname/domain
but then it freezes. Also the screens are not quite right. If I move the
mouse over the input box then they 'clear up' but otherwise I can't read
them. So I 'believe' there is a xorg.conf problem but I'm just guessing.
That's why I want to run sax2 at the beginning of the install. I tried
passing the option 'vga=0x35' <--(if I remember that correctly) and the
install 'started in text mode. There was tux in the upper left corner and
white text over a black background. I thought that would work but after a
while it got back to the gui configuration and led to the same point at
which it had stopped....

Now the next thing I thought I'd try was this. Since I had openSUSE-11.1
installed already I installed VirtualBox® and created a VM upon which I
started the Fedora 10 installation.. This time it worked !!! I got all
the way to the package selection dialog and the gui interface worked fine.
So it seems the virtual install works but the 'hardware' install doesn't.
This indicates that I ought to be able to install directly but I need to do
something differently... I don't want to run virtualized as the computer
only has 512 MB of ram which I have to split with the guest and native OS.
Too slow for the application I'm going to run.

How do I install Fedora 10 on this Dell Dimension 2400 ??

I stopped the install on the virtual machine but I'll do that if it's the
only way to run Fedora but this seems to not be necessary. Help me do a
native install so I can utilize Fedora at 100% (take over the whole disk)..

P.S. After I get this worked out I'm going to install Fedora 10 on an old
Compaq® Presario 7000. But that's another issue for later this week.
Wink
Thanx in advance,

Michael Soibelman

P.S. #2 Sorry for the long post.

The short answer is that I yanked a few parts out of the Dell® box and put
them into another recycled 'white box' pc and all is good. Fedora 10 is
now installed and running well !

I'm not certain but it seems that the Dell® box had problems with IRQ's
and/or the on-board Intel® video chipset also has issues... The Dell®
refused to let me set the hard drive jumper to either 'master' or 'slave'
and would only see the hard drive if I left the jumper off ! Pretty
unusual behavior. So I decided to use the hard drive on a similar computer
that was only lacking a hard drive. Setting the jumper for this box worked
as expected and the install went smoothly.

Anyway, now that I've got Fedora® installed I can proceed with setting up my
enterprise software and take it for a spin. I'll report back with my
results in a few weeks and let ya' know how my return to 'Red Hat' goes.

I see I'm not the only one considering Fedora. I am waiting for Fedora
11 to be released, and probably will use the Gnome version.

Hopefully I won't muck it up, and will be able to dual boot either
openSUSE 11.1 or Fedora.

Looking forward to your report
