Archived from groups: comp>os>linux>setup (more info?)

Hi everyone and thanks in adviance for your help:

Need help with my choise and instalasation - here's the info:

I am on a new Vista laptop for downloading - it is not my pc and will
be staying a Vista pc. I use the Vista only for the net.

I have a old Compaq Presareo I want to work on for school,
entertanment, and business.

It runs a AMD 3D proc. (speed unknown), about 10GB Hard Drive, and
(hope your sitting down) 60MB of Memory. It had a CD-ROM player, a 3
1/2 Flopy, and a USB-1.

I want to share data threw USB Mini-SD Thum Drives so I'll need a
driver (right?), I want a word proceser (suprize), Calculaters, CNC
controlers, CAD, and some games to distract when nesisary.

Ok I think that covers it.

Most 32-bit distributions these days are now optimized for /i686/ - i.e.
Intel Pentium Pro, Pentium II/III/4 and Celerons, and AMD
K7/Athlon/AthlonXP/AthlonMP - but if your processor is an AMD K5, K6,
K6-II or K6-III then you need a distribution that's still optimized
for /i586./

There still are quite a few of those, but you'll have to look around.

> ...] about 10GB Hard Drive, [...

That's very tight. You might get away with Damn Small Linux, but then
still there would be very little room left for your own personal files.

> ...] and (hope your sitting down) 60MB of Memory.

That's too tight. The absolute recommended minimum these days for a
system without an X server running - i.e. character mode only - is 64
MB. If you want to run X11 on top of that, then even with the lightest
of window managers you would still need about 196-256 MB of RAM to do
anything productive.

> It had a CD-ROM player, a 3 1/2 Flopy, and a USB-1.
>

USB storage has already been supported for a long time in just about
every stock distro kernel. You don't need to load a separate driver
for that. They are detected by the system and seen as removable
storage.

> I want a word proceser (suprize), Calculaters, [...

Just about every distribution has those, but your hardware is just not
powerful enough to handle a complex wordprocessor, especially not one
that has WYSIWYG capabilities, because you don't even have enough RAM
to smoothly run a character mode-only system, let alone that you'd have
enough RAM to start an X11 session.

> ...] CNC controlers, CAD, and some games to distract when nesisary.

Every distribution comes with games of all sorts, but CNC controllers
and CAD are typically not Free & Open Source Software, with a few
exceptions, but these are typically not supplied as part of any distro
I know of. Such programs also require far more memory than your
machine has installed.

The bottom line, I'm afraid, is that you're going to need a much more
recent/powerful machine than that Compaq for the intended purposes you
have in mind.

Hope this helps. Wink

Big snip

SLAX is fast and beautiful Linux operating system which fits on small
(3.14") CD-ROM disc. It runs directly from the CD (or USB) without
installing. The Live CD described here is based on the Slackware
Linux
distribution and uses Unification File System (also known as
unionfs),
allowing read-only filesystem to behave as a writable one, saving all
changes to memory."

http://www.slax.org/?lang=en

Requirements:SLAX is not pretentious, nevertheless it requires some
minimal hardware to run properly. It depends on what do you wish
to use
SLAX for, of course. The most important thing is memory. You need at
least 32 MB of RAM to boot slax. More detailed description follows:

Medium:either IDE connected CDROM (to boot from the CD)
or USB FlashDisk (to boot from the mass storage device)
or maybe some harddisk (to boot SLAX from the disk)

BIOS:either non-emulation booting enabled (to boot from the CD)
or USB FlashDrive booting enabled (to boot from the mass storage
device)

Memory
36 MB to boot slax.
96 MB to run Xwindow with fluxbox
144 MB to run Xwindow with KDE
328 MB to be able to use copy2ram cheatcode

Processor: i486 or better, Pentium or AMD are both OK.

Peripheral devices
some keyboard
PS/2 or USB connected mouse (required for Xwindow only)
serial (COM) mouse is not automatically recognized, but can be used

Harddisk:No harddisk is required

===============================

Slax is very nice looking and you will have plenty of room for
your own files but if you want a more compact distribution then
look for Slitaz which is the smallest disto I know of at this time.
It has excellent documentation and the basic utilities are in
a monolithic box file which is very common with these small
distros. You get what you need from the net to bulk it up
for your work. Slitaz!

For a low-end PC there are two distributions I can recommend:

Puppy Linux

or Damn Small Linux

Ubuntu should take care of it. It's also much faster and safer than windoze
for internet use IMO. I wish I'd copyrighted the phrase "please wait", I'd
be rich by now.

Nope...

no Ubuntu for a machine with just 60 megs of RAM

bad suggestion

I'd like to second Puppy. I've been messing with it and it's pretty
friendly. Also if you search for "puplets" there are bunches of
customized versions out there as well, some smaller, some bigger.

LOL

I do that all the time...

Anyway, I've found Ubuntu to be a great distribution...
just needs quite a bit more than 60 megs of ram

Yeah I've been fooling with Linux for about 8 years or so...
but switched over to Linux as my main OS back in January...

Though I had originally gone with Fedora I found that Ubuntu 9.04 really
does a great job and now that's what I'm using!

Try either Zenwalk or Slackware[1].
Zenwalk is designed to get the most out of hold hardware while still
being easy for new comers.
Slackware will give you almost unlimited power over your computer
but before using it go a library and get out a couple of manuals[2]
on running Unix / Linux from the shell[3].

One final note about Slackware. It doesn't start up a graphical without
being told, the command for this is startx.

[1]Actually trying both would be best so long as you try Zenwalk first.
[2]'Just enough Unix' should get you settled in quickly.
[3]A shell is any of several interchangeable command line environments.
For simple use they are all the same but the way that they are customised
can be _extremely_ different.
Technically graphical environments are shells to but it is very rare to
hear them called that.

DSL...might work,
Slax (and other minimalist installs) will get to the command line, but
otherwise....

I think you should look for a better "junk" PC. Look around to see if
you can get an old PC with 256-512MB RAM. These are in the "junk" pile all
of the time, with early Pentium IV's being scrapped right now. Personally,
I wouldn't attempt anything with a GUI with less than 128MB RAM- and even
then that may work if only using the lightest of window managers
(blackbox, twm, etc.). IME, people usually prefer a more user friendly
environments than being dropped at the command line, or forced to use a
minimalist windowing environment. YMMV. This is especially true if the
computer is a personal workstation. If you see my point, it's just not
fair to say,
"I have Vista running, albeit with 2G RAM and a Core 2, but damn that
Linux- it runs like a dog, even though I gave it a /* generous */ 60MB
RAM allotment and an AMD K5 at 300MHz."

There are pawn shops, yard sales, university surplus, ebay, and other
outlets where you can get a better junk PC. Give GNU/Linux a fair shot.

Try Vector Linux Light Edition. It's designed to work with 64mb ram.
That should be fine for Abiword (word processor) too .
