Post subject: Karmic Krapware: "a total disaster...embarrassed to say I'm a fan of Ubuntu... just ridiculous"
Archived from groups: comp>os>linux>advocacy (more info?)

"I worked on trying to get this installed for three straight days and came
to the conclusion that this is a sorry excuse for the "best" Ubuntu release
yet. No matter what I tried, grub would not boot the system after the
installation. Many others in the forum are having the same problem, but no
one seems to know what's causing it or how to fix it. I did manage to get
9.10 installed by reinstalling 9.04, then installing all the updates via
update manager, then upgrading via update manager. The process went smoothly
but some things broke afterwards. Sound and wireless still work great;
that's always a plus. However, my video is just adequate. Although the
system recognized that my video card is an ATI Mobility 9000, there is no
driver installed for my chipset (generic open-vga driver). That means I have
to set my visual effects to "none" just to be able to see my desktop (it's
black otherwise). Screensavers don't work either. The resolution is the
right size though. Still annoying. By going the upgrade route (vs clean
install), I also missed out on the ext4 file system and the ability to
encrypt my home partition until login. I still can't believe this has been
so difficult. You shouldn't have to figure out how to hack grub for find a
"work around" to get it to boot on a new release.

I have to say, I think this particular release is the Microsoft Vista
equivalent....a total disaster that was released before it was ready. It
makes me embarrassed to say that I'm a fan of Ubuntu. There's no way I would
hand out 9.10 discs to friends or recommend it to anyone. I realize that
each release will have it's share of problems, but this is just ridiculous.
I really really hope that 10.4 will redeem Ubuntu.

Edit: I have now reinstalled 9.04. The problems in 9.10 were too numerous
and I don't have the time to mess with it when 9.04 works great."

Yep, it's the latest version of the flagship Linux distro, used by more
victims than any other.

All you cola "advocate$" should "upgrade" real soon now.

No, it isn't.

Going back to 9.04 seems to be the solution for a lot of people.
This release of Ubuntu 9.10 karmic is quickly becoming a public relations
nightmare for Canonical.

Nice retort. You should consider joining your middle school debate team.

He thinks just because a few moronic fanbois like Terry Porter make up
stories of "perfect" Ubuntu 9.10 karmic installs, that it will negate the
pounding this Ubuntu release is getting in the press and on the blogs.

What a tool.

You should consider drinking from your toilet.

Hundreds and hundreds of victims are labeling it a disaster and a nightmare
and disappointing and frustrating and painful and ridiculous, and you claim
it's not a PR problem.

Such a good "advocate"
