Post subject: Installing Netscape
Archived from groups: linux>redhat>rpm (more info?)

Hi all. I'm a newbie to linux, i.e. a real fairdinkum newbie. I have
installed Fedore Core 4 on my second hard drive. I am considering
downloading Netscape and installing it.

I would like any information (in non-linux gibberese) about the steps
involved in installing it correctly. I have tried to install netscape
before on a mandrake system with no good results.

I know that if a file is an rpm you can double click on it to install
but and it does install it. But after that there is more work to be
done to be able to run the program.

This is linux's major downfall as a far as a windows user is
concerned. If somebody could finally work out to just create a binary
file that will run like windows setup.exe and install everything it
needs AND make the program accessible through a shortcut on the
desktop or placing it in the applications menu. It would really make
life just so much easier, both for the novice and the experienced
unix/Linux user.

Anyway, as I said, I would really appreciate some help with the steps
involved installiing Netscape

Thank you all in advance

Tony

Mozilla full suite (browser/mail/etc) runs fine on FC4. The mozilla
install is to d/l the installer and run it.

Any reason why you still prefer Netscape?

It's just that I've used Netscape on Windows and prefer it to explorer.
I would like to Netscape on a Linux system to see how it works compared
to how it works on windows and to see if there are any problems with it
on Linux as there are with windows.

Mozilla is (for some definition of "is") Netscape. Read http://mozilla.org
for the full picture. In any case, unless RH has messed it up, running the
terminal emulator of your choice (Konsole, Gnome-terminal, xterm) the
following sequence should work:

$ su - -c 'yum install netscape'

and enter your root password.

Netscape 7.2 is best browser / news / mail suite for linux.
It's a pity they dropped the linux support for ns8. Quite stupid actually.

NS 7.2 is still working extremely well, enjoy!
