This is one of those 'if I knew what to google, I'd know the answer'
posts, but...

Thinkpad T60 with 11.2 build 0308 (M8?) (1) and Huawei E160 from Orange
UK: I've upgraded the network manager to the latest version, hal
recognises the dongle etc, up to the point that network manager says I
have a connection, and even shows an ip address and dns ips. But no
connection to the net: no Firefox, Pan or even ping. I'm obviously
missing something *really* obvious, and experience tells me that its
quicker to ask a dumb question here than to struggle on when I dont know
what I'm looking for.

(1) Much much impressed - wifi worked out of the box, and I've even got
Visio running with Crossover Office (2)
(2) Sorry - need it for work Sad

Try to insert a valid DNS server by hand to /etc/resolv.conf after pppd
has established the connection. 11.1 had a bug (429772) for that which
might persist with 11.2.
Stefan Seyfried has a blug entry on this:

networkmanager-does-not-handle-your-device/>
