Running oS 11.1, I'm having problems getting it to read from anything except
the default (builtin) ata reader. The system sees an audio CD in that or
an attached USB DVD-RW, KaudioCreator sees (and rips tracks from) the disk
where ever I insert it but I can't seem get Grip to see a disc in the USB
drive. Specifying the device as anything other than /dev/cdrom - as
presented as alternate sources by KAudioCreator - causes the program to
lose access to the CD.

What the heck am I overlooking here? Surely something as common as device
specification should work just as on the other apps I'm running!

OK, this gets to be a tad bit of a hassle but at least it works here.

First, you need to be a member of the disk group - but if you burn CD/DVD's
you should already be that. Next, you have to determine what the device is
mounted as (/dev/sr<x>). The default installed for Grip is to
use /dev/cdrom which will almost always link you to /dev/sr0. The USB
CD/DVD unit will mount in the order in which it was
connected - /dev/sr1,2,3, etc. I happen to have a couple sitting around
and it can be a hassle to figure out which one is which. Simplest way (if
you use KDE) is to open KAudioCreator and check that for the device it's
reading. The key is the specific format of the device name you use.
KAudioCreator uses media:/sr<x> as well as /dev/cdrom and
system:media/sr<x> but it gives you a list of all the available devices -
nice! Grip seems to insist on /dev/cdrom or /dev/sr<x> nomencalture and it
appears to require a shutdown and restart (of the program) to make any
change.

So why not use KAudioCreator? Simple - gotta keep the boss happy and she
prefers Grip. Claims it's easier to use and I learned many years ago that
these arguments I ain't gonna win!
