Post subject: Fedora 10 And Dial-up Modems
Archived from groups: alt>os>linux>redhat (more info?)

I am brand-new to Linux and would like to see if this OS works for me.

It looks like Fedora 10 does not recognize my internal dial-up modem...
(It is a US Robotics v.92 56k PCI, internal. I guess it is a
so-called WinModem.)

Is there anybody who lives in the USA and easily connects to the
Internet via dial-up and Fedora 10? Could you please give me brand and
model number of your modem?

Ideally, I would like to purchase a dial-up modem with USB and serial
connections. (I have an old PC that does not have USB ports and a newer
PC that does not have serial ports. I would like to be able to install
Fedora 10 on both PCs but use only one dial-up modem. I am not
interested in networking the two PCs.)

Thanks.

It would have been most helpful if you told us its USR model number.

My most recent experiences are only with the only internal Linux modem
that US Robotics currently sells, their 5610 series.

eBay has some USR5610C internal PCI modems that would be F10 compatible.
At about $40USD/Ea. they'd uncomplicate your system interface options.
By routing your home's RJ-11 terminated phone cable to the "first"
modem's input connector and then connecting another RJ-11 terminated
cable to the "second" modem from the "first", the "first" computer has
priority over the phone line use.

I know this isn't what you requested. However, this eliminates another
external device while using economical cabling.

My $0.02USD. HTH

Pete
