Post subject: External iSight with PowerBook G4
Archived from groups: linux>debian>ports>powerpc (more info?)

I searched the mailing list archives for reports on how to get iSight
working on Linux. Most of the solutions start out by using the
application 'Coriander' to test if it can display video from the
camera. And then the next step is to get it to work with Ekiga.
However, I am still stuck with 'Coriander'.

I get the following error when trying to start from ISO control:

"ISO transmission refuses to start"

After trying it several times I get a segfault with the following error
message:

libdc1394 error: RAW1394 failure: in
dc1394_video_get_supported_framerates (control.c, line 594): Could not
get supported framerates

The dmesg output when I plug in the iSight is:

[ 2466.157624] ieee1394: Node changed: 0-01:1023 -> 0-00:1023
[ 2466.157659] ieee1394: Node suspended: ID:BUS[0-00:1023]

[ 2471.237650] ieee1394: Node changed: 0-00:1023
-> 0-01:1023
[ 2474.440939] IEEE 1394 device has ROM CRC error
[ 2474.441029] ieee1394: Node resumed: ID:BUS[0-00:1023]
GUID[000a27000413d1e6]

The following is the output of 'lsmod | grep 1394'

video1394 19388 0
raw1394 28424 0
ohci1394 35888 1 video1394
ieee1394 91584 4 sbp2,video1394,raw1394,ohci1394

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Amit

I no longer have my isight, but from memory it worked fine in etch but
I never got it to work in lenny.

Below is from my notes so not sure it will help or make sense Smile

Better late than never?
I have got my isight working in ekiga today. On my g4 emac running
Debian etch. I'm not sure which packages worked as I tried a whole
bunch, below are that packages I installed.

Installed the following packages:
dvbackup (0.0.4rj1-6)
dvgrab (1.8-4)
gscanbus (0.7.1-6)
gstreamer0.8-dv (0.8.12-6)
libdc1394-11 (1.0.0-4)
libdv-bin (1.0.0-1)
libpt-plugins-avc (1.10.2-2)
libpt-plugins-dc (1.10.2-2)
libquicktime0 (2:0.9.7-1)
libraw1394-5 (0.10.1-1.1)

Then as root I ran coriander in a terminal and the isight showed up and
worked fine though on disconecting I had to unplug the camera and
replug it to activate it again.

I quit coriander then I still as root setup an ekiga account and checked enable video. then video plugin as 1394dc.
then input device as /dev/video1394/0. then auto and it worked.

Thanks for the reply.

I actually came across your post while searching in the archives. I
followed your instructions but with no luck. So I guess I'm not the
only one having problems with this in lenny.

Do you think it's a kernel issue? Should I try the latest linux kernel?

Amit
