Post subject: 720p video on G4?
Archived from groups: linux>debian>ports>powerpc (more info?)

Hello all,

First of all, sorry for my very bad english.

I'm trying to play a 1280x720 x264 video:

------------- Video info -------------
[mkv] Track ID 1: video (V_MPEG4/ISO/AVC), -vid 0
[mkv] Track ID 2: audio (A_AC3), -aid 0, -alang eng
[mkv] Will play video track 1.
Matroska file format detected.
VIDEO: [avc1] 1280x720 24bpp 25.000 fps 0.0 kbps ( 0.0 kbyte/s)
open: No such file or directory
[MGA] Couldn't open: /dev/mga_vid
open: No such file or directory
[MGA] Couldn't open: /dev/mga_vid
==========================================================================
Opening video decoder: [ffmpeg] FFmpeg's libavcodec codec family
Selected video codec: [ffh264] vfm: ffmpeg (FFmpeg H.264)
==========================================================================
==========================================================================
Opening audio decoder: [liba52] AC3 decoding with liba52
Using AltiVec optimized IMDCT transform
Checking for AltiVec resampler : 0x0000000a, 2
Using AltiVec optimized resampler
AUDIO: 48000 Hz, 2 ch, s16be, 384.0 kbit/25.00% (ratio: 48000->192000)
Selected audio codec: [a52] afm: liba52 (AC3-liba52)
---------------- End of video info -----------

and I get frame drops: audio are in normal speed but video is slow and
delay.

This video could play in AMD Athlon 1500+ with 4+ years old, I think my
G4 is powerfull that it.

I try other 1280x720 videos (on WMV) with no luck.

I try with VLC, Kaffeine, Dragonplayer and Mplayer: no luck with none.

I look for in Google for optimize but there are no responses.

In some sites they are people saying that they have success on Mac OS X,
but in most sites they say that there aren't lock with h or x264.

Today I note that Marillat have a mplayer Altivec optimized player but
drops too.

Anyone can play 720p videos on Powerbook G4 or similar?

Do you think that compiling mplayer is a good option? Need a specific
library?

I'm afraid that while in theory the performance of these CPUs may be
about the same, in practise the Athlon machine still has several
advantages:

* Due to x86 being more popular, its code is probably better
optimized, in particular but possibly not only for the SIMD
extensions.
* It probably has significantly more memory bandwidth, not only
because it's a desktop vs. a laptop.
* ...

Also, the X driver version / configuration may also matter. Make sure
you're using xserver-xorg-video-radeon from sid and that the DRI is
enabled.

> Anyone can play 720p videos on Powerbook G4 or similar?

Some 'simpler' 720p videos play mostly fine on my PowerBook5,8 (very
similar to your PowerBook5,7), but not a chance for 'more complex' ones.
I assume 'simpler' vs. 'more complex' is a lot due to the bitrate of the
video, but there may be other factors.

I doubt there's a lot to gain compared to mplayer-g4. IME sometimes a
video will play better in one player or the other, but it sounds like
you've already tried that.

This doesn't say if it is outputting to Xv, X11, or GL.... maybe you have a
problem with that.

And also, maybe compositing extension may slow down video output.

Hello all:

Sorry for delay; I'm away for my e-mail last days.

Ok, I'm afraid that a future better optimized code for PowerPC isn't
posible due minor desktop-laptop user since Apple is out; Do you think
about? (I supposed that it's needed a high skill in program and PowerPC)

I'm using:

ii xserver-xorg-video-radeon 1:6.12.2-3
X.Org X server -- ATI Radeon display driver
ii xserver-xorg-video-radeonhd 1.2.5-1
X.Org X server -- AMD/ATI r5xx, r6xx display driver

Did I need only "xserver-xorg-video-radeon"?

Something to adjust better?

I'm using "xv" output in mplayer (in answer to José Jorge).

Do you have a link to some "simpler" video, I want to try in my machine.

Yes, I'd tried with Kaffeine, Mplayer, VLC and Dragon Player; Totem
isn't in the list, perhaps I should try with it too...

Thanks for your time and responses.

It's possible but unlikely.

Yes.

Have you checked that your Xorg.0.log says direct rendering is enabled?

None offhand, sorry.

Why Glxinf say that "direct rendering: Yes" and Xdriinfo and X's says no?

Note: At this moment I'm using two monitors (using DVI output), Should
be influenced in this test?

Don't worry about.

Hi,
Just one remark made me tick :

I had problems with direct rendering on multiple-monitor setup because
of the lack of video memory. Try with your laptop's screen only first.
You could also look what exactly caused :
(WW) RADEON(0): Direct rendering disabled
in the logs, by looking the preceding lines.

Benjamin

Test with only laptop's screen:

----------------- Xorg.log ------------
(II) RADEON(0): [DRI] installation complete
(II) RADEON(0): [drm] removed 1 reserved context for kernel
(II) RADEON(0): [drm] unmapping 8192 bytes of SAREA 0xf103b000 at 0x48027000
(II) RADEON(0): [drm] Closed DRM master.
(WW) RADEON(0): Direct rendering disabled
(II) RADEON(0): XAA Render acceleration unsupported on Radeon 9500/9700
and newer. Please use EXA instead.
(II) RADEON(0): Render acceleration disabled
(II) RADEON(0): num quad-pipes is 1
(II) RADEON(0): Using XFree86 Acceleration Architecture (XAA)

32 256x256 slots
16 512x512 slots
(II) RADEON(0): Acceleration enabled
------------------- end of Xorg.log ----------

Until this moment I don't know anything about EXA; I'd need to look for
into Wikipedia for "this" EXA architecture.

I try now enabling EXA in xorg.conf (before look for in the net) and now
log show this:

-------------------- Xorg.log before EXA ------------------
II) RADEON(0): [DRI] installation complete
(II) RADEON(0): [drm] removed 1 reserved context for kernel
(II) RADEON(0): [drm] unmapping 8192 bytes of SAREA 0xf249f000 at 0x48027000
(II) RADEON(0): [drm] Closed DRM master.
(WW) RADEON(0): Direct rendering disabled
(II) RADEON(0): Render acceleration enabled for R300/R400/R500 type cards.
(II) RADEON(0): Setting EXA maxPitchBytes
(II) RADEON(0): num quad-pipes is 1
(II) EXA(0): Offscreen pixmap area of 50561024 bytes
(II) EXA(0): Driver registered support for the following operations:
(II) Solid
(II) Copy
(II) Composite (RENDER acceleration)
(II) RADEON(0): Acceleration enabled
(II) RADEON(0): DPMS enabled
(==) RADEON(0): Silken mouse enabled
(II) RADEON(0): No video input capabilities detected and no information
is provided - disabling multimedia i2c
(II) Loading sub module "theatre_detect"
(II) LoadModule: "theatre_detect"
(II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/multimedia//theatre_detect_drv.so
(II) Module theatre_detect: vendor="X.Org Foundation"
compiled for 1.6.3, module version = 1.0.0
ABI class: X.Org Video Driver, version 5.0
(II) RADEON(0): no multimedia table present, disabling Rage Theatre.
(II) RADEON(0): Set up overlay video
(II) RADEON(0): Set up textured video
-------------------- End of xorg.org before EXA ----------------

I test now 720p video and result is the same. I'm not sure that enabling
EXA is better results. But, at least I have less Warning in X system.

There are anymore to test?

Hi

I cant play 720p on a PowerBook G4 5,4 (1,33 Ghz, 15 inch, Radeon 9600/9700
rv350) either.
But I forgot to:

aptitude install firmware-linux

That helped a little regarding performance, I think.
In that package is the Firmware for R3xx ATI cards. Maaaybe this will speed
things up a little, but I dont think it will be enough for 720p.

A simple way to check if the CPU can decode the 720p, even with an ideal GPU :

mplayer -vo null movie720.avi

Hi there,

Sorry for jumping in late here.

Gee, I wish that I had both a fast GPU & CPU like you guys have (I only
have a G3 and Rage 128 here).

> mplayer -vo null movie720.avi

Indeed. Using

$ mplayer -nosound -vo null -benchmark foo.avi

is also a good idea to see how the machine works (if it is not CPU
bound), especially after doing something like:

$ dd if=foo.avi of=/dev/null

to get the file in the cache. Depending on the format of the video (say,
a H.264 video), it takes quite a good amount of CPU to decode the video.
Converting it to a simpler format (say, MPEG-4 Part 2) might be a good
workaround.

To check the memory bandwidth of your machine, one simple-minded tool
that I used in the past is mbw (try: apt-cache show mbw).

And I can report that I got some low-resolution H.264 videos to be
playable on my 600MHz G3 iBook with mplayer and the options:

-vfm ffmpeg -lavdopts fast

This proved to be useful to play even Steve Job's video from this month.

For a source of some short 720p videos, you can try some available on
youtube or on Apple's quicktime section of the site.
